Dealing With the Holidays When You Wear Braces

The holidays are upon us, which means life will be filled with parties, food, drinks and lots of laughs. If you have braces, this is also a time to be extra careful about what you eat. It is very easy to throw caution to the wind and forget about your diet that is not only keeping your braces intact, but also allowing your teeth to stay healthy. Just because you have braces does not mean that you cannot have some fun. Just remember these simple tips as you celebrate with friends and loved ones.

Brush your teeth more often: Chances are that all of the gatherings and functions that you will be attending this season will also have you consuming more sugar. Try to increase the number of times that you brush your teeth in order to keep the sugar from eating away at your enamel and causing tooth decay while you have braces.

Think before you eat: Even though something might look mighty tempting on the holiday table, consider what it will do to your braces. Try to steer clear of any hard, sticky or super sweet foods. If you are feeling left out, try bringing a few of your own dishes that you know are safe enough to eat and will keep you satisfied.

Keep up with your appointments: Everyone gets caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but that does not mean that you should skip your regular appointments. Visiting your orthodontist for regular appointments, and visiting us for regular cleanings will ensure that your braces are intact and that your teeth are healthy as you enjoy yourself during the holiday season.
