Getting old is unavoidable. It is isn't always pretty and comes with its fair share of problems. Your mouth and oral health will be no exception...
A broken tooth is not something that is very pleasant. It is often painful, and it can have a negative impact on your appearance. Knowing how to treat a broken tooth is important.
There are steps to take immediately and there are steps to take later on. The sped that you take these steps can depend on how severe the broken tooth is. Here are some of the things to do for a severely broken tooth.
Unless you happen to break a tooth while visiting the dentist, the first steps you take are at home. The key is to protect the broken tooth and to prevent the tooth from damaging the areas around it. A jagged tooth can cut the gums, tongue or cheeks causing even more trouble. Severely broken teeth can involve several teeth or other parts of the mouth that need attention.
If there is bleeding use a compress to control and stop the bleeding. If there are jagged edges, cover it with a piece of wax, paraffin or sugarless gum to prevent any other damage. If there is pain, use acetaminophen. If you need to eat, use soft foods and try to avoid biting down on the broken tooth.
Even if you control the pain, stop the bleeding, prevent any damage and like eating soft food, you still need to do something about the broken tooth. If you do nothing, you risk losing that tooth and others around it. You are at a risk for infection and gum disease.
The best way to prevent these things from happening or anything worse from happening is by getting to a dentist as soon as possible. You can get emergency appointments to get started on the repair of the broken tooth.
